1. Fujikasa Satoko 藤笠 砂都子
Fujikasa Satoko (1980,Yamaguchi) studied at Tokyo University of the Arts. She quickly gained great appreciation for her work, was selected for such prestigious exhibitions as the 3rd Kikuchi Biennial in 2009. She has since won many awards and also gained great recognition internationally. Her work is included in the collections of prominent museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Ibaraki Ceramics Museum in Kasama.
Her work is whimsical and fluid at the same time, and for the viewer a source of constant surprise. It evokes associations with elusive nature, of tree stumps in a primeval forest, or of coral reefs at the bottom of the ocean. She uses the coarse but malleable clay of Shigaraki, which is modeled and rolled out with angelic patience into sometimes wafer-thin walls, forming the object. The constant drying before further modeling means she sometimes works on an object for months.
