82. Sayuri Ikake  紗百合井掛

Sayuri Ikake was born in Osaka in 1990, and studied at Kobe Design and Art University. Initially, she chose a broad craft training with various materials such as glass, metal, clay, wood; each associated with specific and often ancient craft techniques. However, she soon developed a special interest in ceramics and how traditional skills were increasingly perfected over time. Following her ceramics training, she did an additional postgraduate year in which she chose "glazing techniques" as her research topic in order to develop and master her own technique. After a short stay at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina USA, she had the opportunity to establish herself as an artist in residence at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. It is there that Sayuri began to explore new creative paths. Using the turntable, she began creating artworks that were created in separate parts only to combine them into one artwork. She creates forms that have no purpose other than to be form. However, what has the most impact on the viewer are the intense, bright colors in which she envelops her objects. Their intensity makes color and form seem to merge and both form a whole, not static but rather full of movement and vibration, like objects seem to vibrate in the sun on hot summer days.

Sayuri Ikake has participated in many group exhibitions and also has a number of solo international exhibitions to her credit, including in 2017 the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in Yeoju, South Korea and in 2018 at A. Iynedjian Fine Art/AIFA in Geneva, Switzerland.
